Have you ever followed a business on Instagram simply because you loved the person behind it?

Maybe you loved their personality, the way they shared their everyday life, their perspective on their industry, or how they made you feel like you were part of their community.

You might have originally discovered them because of a product or service, but you stayed because of the person behind the brand.

That’s the power of personal branding.

As a business owner, it’s easy to get caught up in sharing what you do, what you sell, and why someone should work with you. And while those things are important, there’s another piece of your marketing that deserves just as much attention: giving people a reason to connect with YOU.

Your personal brand is what makes your business feel recognizable, relatable, and memorable. It’s the personality behind your services, the values behind your decisions, and the little details that make someone think of you when they need what you offer.

And the best part? You don’t need to become an influencer, share every detail of your personal life, or completely change the way you show up online to build one.

You just need to start showing people a little more of what makes your brand yours.

Let’s get into it!

1. Stop Making Every Post About What You Sell

Social-first marketing agency for female founders in PA

One of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make on social media is treating every post like an advertisement.

Of course, your audience needs to know what you offer. They need to understand your services, your process, and how to work with you. But if every single post is focused on selling, you’re missing opportunities to build a relationship with the people following you.

Think about your favorite businesses or creators. Chances are, you don’t follow them just because they’re constantly promoting something.

You follow them because you enjoy their content. You relate to their experiences. You trust their perspective. You feel connected to their brand.

Your social media should give people multiple reasons to stick around.

Try incorporating these types of content into your strategy:

  • Personal content: Share your hobbies, interests, favorite things, or a little glimpse into your everyday life.
  • Educational content: Share what you know, answer common questions, and offer advice that helps your audience.
  • Behind the scenes: Show the process, the people, and the work that goes into running your business.
  • Values and opinions: Talk about what matters to you, what you believe in, and what makes your approach different.
  • Promotional content: Share your services, products, client experiences, and ways people can work with you.

The goal is to create a brand that people enjoy following, not just a page they visit when they’re ready to make a purchase.

2. Let People Get to Know the Person Behind the Business

You don’t have to share your entire personal life online to build a personal brand. But you should give people opportunities to get to know the person they’re supporting.

Especially for small businesses, creatives, and service providers, YOU are often a big part of the customer experience.

People want to know who they’re hiring. They want to understand your personality, your approach, and what it might feel like to work with you.

Start by sharing more of the things that make you who you are.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Share how you got started in your industry.
  • Introduce yourself and your team.
  • Talk about what inspired you to start your business.
  • Share a few hobbies or interests outside of work.
  • Show what a typical workday looks like.
  • Talk about something you’re currently learning or working toward.
  • Share a lesson you’ve learned as a business owner.

And don’t underestimate the power of the little things.

Your morning coffee, your favorite local business, the creative project you’re working on, or the playlist you always have on in the studio might not seem like important business content. But these are the details that help people connect with you beyond the service you provide.

A little personality goes a long way.

3. Have a Point of View and Don’t Be Afraid to Share It

Here’s something I want more business owners to understand: having a personal brand means having a perspective.

You don’t have to agree with everyone in your industry. You don’t have to follow every trend. And you certainly don’t have to create content that sounds exactly like everyone else’s.

Your experiences, opinions, and approach are what make your brand different.

Think about the things you believe in when it comes to your industry.

Maybe you’re a wedding photographer who believes your couples should spend less time worrying about the perfect photos and more time enjoying their wedding day.

Maybe you’re a wellness professional who believes taking care of yourself shouldn’t feel like another item on your to-do list.

Maybe you’re a social media manager who believes businesses don’t need to post every single day to grow.

These perspectives are part of your brand.

Content ideas to try:

  • 3 things I will always believe as a [your profession].
  • An unpopular opinion about my industry.
  • Something I wish more business owners understood about [your industry].
  • What I would do differently if I were starting my business today.
  • A lesson running my business has taught me.

Don’t just tell people what you do. Show them how you think.

That’s how you begin building trust and attracting the people who align with your business.

4. Create a Visual Identity People Recognize

Let’s talk about the visual side of personal branding.

When someone scrolls through Instagram, you have a very short amount of time to catch their attention. Having a recognizable visual identity can help your content stand out and make your brand easier to remember.

And no, this doesn’t mean every post needs to look identical or that you need a perfectly curated Instagram feed.

It means creating a consistent visual experience that feels like your business.

Start with the basics:

  • Colors: Choose a color palette that reflects your brand personality.
  • Typography: Use a consistent selection of fonts across your graphics.
  • Photography: Incorporate images that reflect your personality, business, and experience.
  • Graphics: Develop repeatable templates and design elements.
  • Visual details: Incorporate branded icons, illustrations, or other recognizable elements into your content.

One small detail I especially love is custom branded icons.

Think about the little graphic elements you could incorporate into your Instagram carousels, educational posts, Stories, and other marketing materials.

When these icons are designed specifically for your brand, they become another visual element people can associate with your business.

Over time, these little details help create a recognizable look that feels distinctly yours.

Remember, your visual identity doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs to feel intentional and consistent.

5. Develop Content Series That Become Part of Your Brand

Personal branding for female founders and creative business owners

One of my favorite ways to build a recognizable personal brand is through recurring content series.

Think about the creators you follow who have a specific series you look forward to seeing. Maybe it’s their weekly tips, monthly favorites, behind-the-scenes videos, or a recurring series about their industry.

These formats give your audience something familiar to come back to while helping you build consistency in your content.

They also make content planning a whole lot easier because you’re not starting from scratch every time you sit down to create.

Here are a few ideas you could make your own:

  • Monday Musings: Share a thought, lesson, or perspective to start the week.
  • Behind the Business: Give your audience a look at what happens behind the scenes.
  • Things I’m Loving Lately: Share your current favorites, recommendations, or tools.
  • Ask the Expert: Answer questions you regularly receive from clients.
  • A Little Industry Insight: Share trends, observations, or helpful tips from your industry.
  • The Monthly Recap: Share what you’ve been working on, creating, or celebrating.

The trick is to choose formats that feel natural to you and that you can realistically keep up with.

You don’t need six different series. Start with one or two and see what your audience responds to.

6. Show the Experience of Working With You

Personal branding for female founders and creative business owners

Your personal brand doesn’t stop at your personality or the content you create. It’s also about the experience people associate with your business.

What does it feel like to work with you?

What makes your process different?

What can someone expect when they become a client?

These are important questions because people aren’t just choosing a service. They’re choosing the person and business they’re trusting to deliver it.

For wedding vendors, this could mean showing the experience from the first inquiry to the wedding day.

For a photographer, it might mean sharing what happens during a branding session, how you help clients feel comfortable in front of the camera, or how you prepare for a shoot.

For a service provider, it could mean sharing your onboarding process, client communication, or what goes into delivering your work.

A few content ideas:

  • A behind-the-scenes look at a client project.
  • What happens after someone books with you?
  • A client testimonial paired with your perspective.
  • A day in the life of delivering your service.
  • What makes the experience of working with you different?

Don’t just showcase the finished product. Show people the experience that gets them there.

A Few Things to Remember About Building Your Personal Brand

Before you start planning your next month of content, I want to leave you with a few reminders.

You don’t have to share everything. Personal branding is about being intentional with what you share, not giving up your privacy.

You don’t have to be everywhere. Choose the platforms and content formats that make sense for your business and audience.

You don’t need to follow every trend. Your brand should have its own identity. Trends can be a tool, but they shouldn’t define your entire strategy.

You don’t need to look perfectly polished. Sometimes the most relatable content is the content that feels the most natural.

You do need to be consistent. Recognition comes from showing up with a recognizable voice, perspective, and visual identity over time.

Ready to Put a Little More Personality Into Your Brand?

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this post, it’s that your business doesn’t have to look, sound, or feel like everyone else’s.

Your story is different. Your experiences are different. Your approach to your industry is different.

And those differences are worth sharing.

You don’t have to become someone else to build a memorable brand. You just have to get comfortable letting people see more of what already makes you YOU.

At Inspired Social Studio, we love helping businesses bring more personality and intention into their online presence.

And sometimes, it’s the little details that make all the difference.
